This Week in Track & Field: Week 4

The 4th week of the season has come to an end. It was another nine meet week for us at Wolf Creek. With 16 meets on the slate this upcoming week, we are getting into the heart of the outdoor track & field season. Let’s get into the weekly recap:

Monday 4/3:

In Mars, the Hampton girls edged Mars with a close 79 to 71 victory. However, the Mars boys handled their business against the Hampton boys with a 88 to 62 win. Standout performances of the meet included:

  • Mars Freshman, Autumn Flowers, running 16.98 in the Girls 100 hurdles, a PA Top 10 time this season.
  • Hampton Senior, Ava Vitiello, posting a time of 5:27.43 in the girls 1600m another PA Top 10 time.
  • On the boys side, Hampton Junior, Dale Hall, ran 4:31.88 in the 1600m good for an early season PA Top 10 time.
  • Mars Senior, Jacob Thompson, posted the time to beat so far in this young season in the boys 200m running 22.44 – #1 in the state.

At Martorelli Stadium, Butler faced North Hills in a section 3 matchup. The Butler boys and girls both emerged victorious over the Indians. The final scores were Butler Girls 120.50 to 29.50 for North Hills and the Butler boys 110.50 to 39.50 for North Hills. Butler sophomore, Madison McGarrah, posted a PA Top 10 time in the girls 800m of 2:30.42. Her teammate, junior, Grace Nichols cleared 5-3 in the high jump a state best mark this season. Meanwhile, Butler senior, Megan Baggetta jumped 38-11.50 in the girls triple jump a USA Top 25 jump. North Hills senior, Megan Interthal threw a career best 103-4 in the javelin – a PA Top 10 mark thus far. In the boys meet, North Hills senior, Jayden Thomas, and Butler junior, David Graef both posted 11.17 times in the 100m good for top 10 in the state. In the 300m hurdles, North Hills sophomore, Gamaliel Mogire ran 41.33 another state top 10 time. In the field, Butler senior, Ryan Porch cleared 6-0 in the high jump (PA Top 10), while teammate Luke Campbell jumped 21-11 in the long jump also a PA Top 10 mark.

Tuesday 4/4

If you like close meets, North Catholic at Armstrong was the place to be on Tuesday. In the closest meet of the young season, the North Catholic boys edged the River Hawks of Armstrong 75 to 74. There was no third place finish in the high jump thus the meet totaled 149 points instead of the typical 150 points. The girls meet was also a close one with the North Catholic girls besting Armstrong 78 to 71.

North Catholic’s Grace Lazzara earned a pair of victories in the girls 1600m (5:30.54) and the 800m (2:30.18). Her winning would not be done for the week. Armstrong sophomore, Annie Atwood, won the girls 400m with a time of 62.37 (PA Top 10). On the boys side, Armstrong’s Landon Crissman bested the field in the boys 110m hurdles in 16.46 a PA Top 10 time so far this year. North Catholic’s Austin Gaetano won the triple jump in a personal best jump of 39-6 (PA Top 10).

Over in Freedom, the Bulldogs hosted OLSH, South Side, and Carlynton in a quad meet. Standout performances included Carlynton sophomore, Jordynn Carter winning the triple jump in a PA Top 10 jump of 35-10.50. OLSH senior, Antonio Votour, won the boys 110m hurdles in a state leading time of 14.70. Full dual meet scores from this meet are listed below:

In Gibsonia, the Rams of Pine Richland hosted the Indians of North Hills in a middle school meet. The Pine Richland girls emerged victorious 99 to 42, while the North Hills boys bested Pine Richland 86 to 55.

Wednesday 4/5

On the scenic campus of Shady Side Academy, Riverview, Sto Rox, Eden Christian, and Shady Side faced off in a quad meet. In the girls meet, Lara DeFazio, an Eden Christian sophomore, won the girls 100m in 12.67 (PA Top 10). DeFazio also won the girls high jump (4-10). Meanwhile on the boys side, it was the Ryan Merrick show. Ryan, an Eden senior, cleared 6-3 the boys high jump – tops in the keystone state this season. In front of a large crowd, he was the last man jumping nearly 1 hour after every other track & field event had ended. Other solid performances from the Warriors of Eden Christian included Ethan Haring winning the boys 800m in 1:58.17 and Matt Otto winning the 3200m in 9:56.40. Full meet scores can be seen below:

At Pine Richland High School, the Big Macs took on the Rams. The Canon McMillan girls defeated Pine Richland 79 to 71, while the PR boys beat Canon McMillan 96 to 54. Maren Iski won the girls 1600m in 5:23.37, while Canon McMillan’s Kuchera won the girls 100m hurdles in 15.41.

Thursday 4/6

The Butler County Classic highlighted Thursday’s meet slate. Seneca Valley, Grove City, Butler, North Catholic, Slippery Rock, and Freeport clashed at this annual invitational. According to PA MileSplit, the meet featured four elite performances:

  • Seneca Valley’s Madison Monahan won the girls Pole Vault clearing 10-6
  • Butler’s Megan Baggetta jumped 38-7 in the girls triple jump
  • Freeport Area’s Michael Braun won the boys 1600m in 4:23.80
  • Grove City sophomore, MJ Pottinger, won the boys 3200m in 9:38.99

The most exciting race of the meet came in the girls 1600m where North Catholic’s Grace Lazzara battled Josie Jones of Grove City Area. Lazzara, a junior, ran 5:21.37 to hold off Jones, a freshman, by just 11 hundredths of a second. Jones ran 5:21.48. For Lazzara, it was yet another victory on the week.

Other notable performance included:

  • Landon Lacey (Butler) 49.83 in the boys 400m
  • Levi Prementine (Slippery Rock) 39.99 in the boys 300h

Over in Gibsonia, Pine Richland hosted the Planets of Mars in a middle school meet. The Rams defeated the Planets in both the boys and girls meets.
