The Whiskey Rebellion 5K is one of the region’s longest-running Independence Day road races, held each July 4 in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania and hosted by the Canon-McMillan Cross Country Boosters.
In August 2025, the Boosters contacted Wolf Creek Race Management with a simple goal: elevate the event and provide participants with a more professional race experience than they had received from their previous timing provider.
The results were significant.
A Strategic Approach Beyond Race Timing
At Wolf Creek, race timing is only one component of what we provide. Our philosophy is that every endurance event has opportunities to improve registration, participant experience, and financial performance.
For the Whiskey Rebellion 5K, our work began months before race day.
Website & Brand Refresh
We redesigned the event logo and completely overhauled the race website using RunSignUp’s powerful V2 platform. The result was a modern, customized website that better reflected the quality and history of the event while leveraging the platform’s advanced marketing and analytics tools.
A professional online presence is often a participant’s first impression of an event. Investing in that experience can have a meaningful impact on registration performance.
Smarter Registration Strategy
Rather than offering a single registration price throughout the season, we implemented a tiered pricing structure with multiple scheduled price increases.
Each price increase was paired with automated reminder emails, creating urgency and encouraging runners to register earlier.
Early registration benefits both participants and race organizers. It gives runners the opportunity to secure the lowest available pricing while providing race directors with better forecasting for shirts, awards, food, water, staffing, and other race-day logistics.
Across the endurance industry, approximately 26% of registrations occur within three days of a scheduled price increase, making strategic pricing one of the most effective tools available for driving registration momentum.
The Results
The outcome demonstrated that investing in a comprehensive race management partner can generate a positive return.
Although Wolf Creek’s services cost approximately $1,000 more than the previous timing provider, the event experienced:
- 34% year-over-year growth in registration revenue
- Nearly $10,000 more registration revenue than the previous year
- An estimated net financial gain of approximately $9,000, even after the increased investment in race management services
More importantly, participants experienced a noticeably elevated event from start to finish.
Elevating Race Day
The previous race setup consisted primarily of a timing mat and traffic cones at the finish line.
Wolf Creek transformed the finish area into a professional race environment featuring:
- Premium white French barricade finish chute
- Large inflatable finish line archway
- On-course split timing
- iPads for Race Day CheckIn
- Instant live results
- Professional Bose public address system for music and announcements
- Custom Whiskey Rebellion branded bib numbers
- Professional chip timing and race management
These enhancements not only improve participant satisfaction but also create a stronger atmosphere for spectators, volunteers, sponsors, and the community.
Packet Pickup Optimization
Creating a great race experience begins well before the starting line.
Wolf Creek worked with the Canon-McMillan Cross Country Boosters to optimize every aspect of packet pickup, providing both the technology and operational expertise needed to handle a field of more than 1,000 participants efficiently.
Using RunSignUp’s free RaceDay CheckIn App, Wolf Creek configured the event for Dynamic Bib Assignment, supplied eight iPads with built-in hotspots for volunteers to use, and provided hands-on training to ensure the packet pickup team was comfortable with the system before participants arrived.
The results were outstanding.
Despite serving a field of more than 1,000 runners, the longest recorded time for a participant to move through the entire packet pickup process – from entering the line to leaving with their race materials – was just 2 minutes and 30 seconds.
An efficient packet pickup not only improves the participant experience but also reduces volunteer stress, minimizes congestion, and allows race organizers to focus on delivering an exceptional event.
More Than Timing
This project illustrates the difference between simply timing a race and strategically managing one.
Wolf Creek Race Management works with race directors throughout the planning process to identify opportunities that increase registrations, improve participant experience, strengthen event branding, and maximize revenue.
For the Whiskey Rebellion 5K, that partnership resulted in record registration revenue, a more professional event, and an enhanced experience for everyone involved.
